Yehia M. Ibrahim is a senior scientist at the Biological Sciences Division at PNNL. He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in chemistry from Cairo University. His M.Sc. research involved understanding the physicochemical properties of materials using UV spectroscopy and molecular orbital calculations. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 2003 and spent one year as Postdoctoral fellow at VCU before coming to PNNL on 2005. Dr. Ibrahim has authored over 80 journal papers and is an inventor of 16 US patents in the fields of mass spectrometry (MS) and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). His research is focused on the development of new mass spectrometry and IMS-based technologies to improve the sensitivity and the specificity of ion mobility and mass spectrometry. His early work at PNNL involved developing a high-pressure ion funnel, ion funnel trap and integration of these new components into ion mobility-time of flight mass spectrometer. Dr. Ibrahim’s work has also led to the development of a new ultrasensitive IMS-TOF platform for biomolecule analysis for which PNNL was awarded the 2013 R&D 100. He is currently involved in research efforts for the development of improved tandem mass spectrometry in IMS-TOF MS and the Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation (SLIM) technology which will lead to a new capability that will further advance the ion mobility use in MS-based proteomics. Dr. Ibrahim has also published on thermochemistry, kinetics, and laser spectroscopy of ion molecules reactions and clusters structures using ion mobility and molecular orbital calculations.
